Assignment 2.1: PII - Human Performance Problem (Performance Gap)

The main problem for Port Townsend School District is the lack of technology that is accessible. The existing level of performance at this time is very minimal. The district is waiting for a technology levvy which will bring in a large amount of technology. Another issue is deciding what technology to institute, how it will be beneficial, and what it will do for the community and the schools.

Cause Analysis
1.Why do you think this problem developed in your company?
2.Why does this gap exist?

The problem has developed at the school district because the funding across the state has been limited. Many districts are constantly fighting to fund even sports. It is a major issue in our district. Moreover, because we are receiving a technology levvy, the technology committee is determining what will be most efficient in utilizing the levvy. Based on many other districts and schools across the nation, our district is behind and working with limited tools. The main question is, how will our students be globally connected and ready for college or career if they are not trained or prepared and if students do not have access to technology or tools that would help in preparation for this?

Module 3.1: Three Intervention Strategies

Three Intervention Strategies

Since the finalities of this project will be the integration of Photo Walk as a tool that can be used in the classroom for learning and educational purposes, the main interventions needed will be the funding of technology so that this idea can become a reality.

Low-end intervention. The low-end intervention needed will first be funding the cost of technology by providing new laptops and desktop workstations that include updated Flash and web camera capabilities, as well. This would be the first intervention, rather low level. This would be the beginning of being able to use the function of Photo Walks. This would allow teachers the time to invest in exploring the program, working with photographers across the world and nation, and figuring out how the program works and ways to make it an educational endeavor in connection with the present curriculum.

Middle end intervention. The next intervention strategy would be the

Restructuring of the present bandwidth and broadband capabilities with the new Restructuring of present bandwidth and broadband capabilities with a new system for delivering of technology at a higher and faster speed, that would not interfere with every day use of technology, but capable for such projects like Photo Walks. This would take a possible rebuilding of the infrastructure overall, including the server. This definitely cost the most. This would also include expanding the district server, revising the server requirements, and preparing workstations to function and have a fast-paced speed to keep up with the technological demands that are ever changing.

High-end intervention. This would be a major investment in not only a technological overhaul, but a way to utilize Photo Walks across several grade levels, curriculums, and train teacher’s, in connection with photographers, how to utilize such a great tool for educational purposes. This intervention would take professional development training from both community members, (photographers), and teachers on ways to make this successfully integrated in the classroom. This intervention would be costly, just because it demands so much time and training, specifically on how to make connections with other photographers across the world and country through conference calls, email, and Skype, but also the demands of time for teacher’s to integrate such a rich lesson in with their curriculum, which is already jammed pack.

Module 4:Justification
Strengths. Each intervention has its own sets of strengths. The lower intervention strengthens on the technological aspect of the items that need to be replaced in order to fulfill the use of Photo Walks. The second intervention's strengths is the overhaul of the infrastructure of the server and bandwidth. The third intervention and largest of the undertaking will be the integration of the tool into classrooms and curriculum at a school and district wide level. The limitations are primarily funding, resources, and time. This would encompass all three.

Intervention strategy of choice. The one strategy, I feel would best solve the problem of implementation of Photo Walks at a district level is going to be the initial funding and utilization of computers and media resources that can be provided by the district and state funds. Notably, I would focus on the first intervention strategy because it is the initial stepping stone of getting everything completed and ready prior to even introducing or thinking about such programs like Virtual Photo Walks.

Furthermore, because the program is so new and has not been linked to education or used for educational proposes, there is not much data to look at. However, my intentions will be to look closely at data over the next few weeks and update on my findings, on why technology is a definite asset to our 21st century learners, and that we cannot expect our students to continue to use jurassic tools as our society continues to advance forward. It makes no sense.

The interview strategy I intend to use will be a combination of sit down panel like discussions and also anonymous survey tools, like Survey Monkey, so I can get an immediate picture of the data in which I intend to use.
